We are also trauma informed and have extensive experience in managing all aspects of childhood, adolescent and adult based traumas as well as having extensive experience in working with substance related difficulties. We often find that many of the clients we work with experiencing substance related difficulties also have a trauma background.

Addiction Philosophy

Our understanding and practice is informed by the philosophy of Harm Minimisation and advances in neuroscience to help people manage their addiction. We have extensive training and experience in providing support for people dealing with alcohol and other drug use and provide services to support families. The therapy approach adopted will depend on the concerns a person has and the goals they would like to work towards. When working with substance issues, we find it important to look beyond the substance and to see the whole person. Strategies that assist in reducing or abstaining from substance use is helpful, but when you take away substance use, you are also potentially taking away a person’s solution to their problems. Gabor Mate, a Canadian Physician and international speaker on addiction writes “A hurt is at the centre of all addictive behaviours.” Years of clinical research and experience has revealed the impact adverse life experiences has on directly shaping the psychology and the neurobiology of addiction in the brain. Like Mate, we believe it is impossible to understand addiction without asking what relief and comfort the addicted person hopes to find.

Telehealth Services

The world of healthcare is changing and with the effects of Covid 19 we are having to be creative in how we stay connected and access the services we need. With the evolution of secure videoconferencing platforms, psychological therapy can now be conducted safely and securely on-line. Secure video conferencing works in similar ways to Facetime and Skype.

At Cambridge Psychology we can provide you with online psychological services using video conferencing platforms that are secure and specifically designed for the health industry. For a telehealth session, you need a computer/laptop or mobile device with a camera or a mobile phone. Online psychological therapy sessions work the same as in-person consultations. Your session is still 50 – 55 minutes and longer times can be negotiated if needed. We will send you a form to complete prior to your session, and the form is easy to complete and does not require a printer. Prior to your appointment, our receptionist will send you an email with a link to join the online session.
